"Are you sure?" Tracie said. "I'm not. In fact, I can't remember him at all from last year. I hardly remember seeing him at school this year."

"He was there," Rick said.

"He's just quiet," Paula said. "He's . .

."

"He's what?" Tracie asked when her friend didn't finish.

"Nothing."

"What?"

"Nothing." Paula strode to the edge of the porch and stared out across the desert, following the curve of the dirt road, the final orange rays of the setting sun slipping off her face. "Do you really think they're out there?"

"Yes," Tracie said. Rick was right—Paula was scared, much more than herself. But why? Tracie had to ask herself. Rick was right—the reasons she had given him were really no reasons at all. Kissing siblings, gray hiking clothes, lost watches, identical gold chains—it certainly didn't add up to the end of

"he world.

Tracie had a headache. She realized the bad smell

>vas giving it to her. The odor appeared to be coming crom inside the house.

"We'd never find them in that desert," Paula said.

They couldn't even find Joe."

"That's where he died, isn't it?" Tracie asked.

"Somewhere out there." Paula sighed. "Soon it'll be year."

'I know," Tracie said. "It was last June that . .

."

he paused. "When exactly will it be a year?"

Paula looked at her. "I can't remember."
